5 Books To Save Your Marriage
As a relationship therapist, my clients are constantly asking for reading recommendations to help supplement our therapy sessions. With the self-help genre of relationship books booming, I decided to compile my own list of therapist-approved books to help enhance your relationships.
1. The Seven Principles for Making Marriage Work This books provides seven core principles that build healthy relationships. Written by John Gottman, an expert in the field of Marriage and family therapy, this book provides an expert and scientific look into what makes marriages tick.
2. The Five Love Languages
Often couples enter therapy with already reading this book. None the less, it has still made the list of being a must-read book for any couple trying to understand their partner better. The Five Love Languages helps to create connection between couples by helping them learn to love their partner in the way that they receive love. Gary Chapman does an excellent job creating a easy readable book for couples to both enjoy.
3. Hold Me Tight
Hold Me Tight translates emotions between couples and helps couples gain a better understanding of how to rebuild their emotional bond. Sue Johnson, is an expert in the field of Marriage and Family Therapy and focuses her research on attachment theory. This book challenges the couple to look at their wounds from previous relationships and helps navigate how to heal those wounds.
4. What Makes Love Last?
This book from John Gottman and Nan Silver is perfect for couples who are struggling with trust and commitment in relationships. The duo shares their formula for trust, avoiding betrayal, and repairing trust after it has been broken.
5. Braving The Wilderness
Brene Brown is best known for her research on courage, shame, and vulnerability. While this book is not specifically written for couples, this book provides a new way of looking at relationships with others. Brene Brown shares the importance of vulnerability in relationships and speaks to those looking to find belonging in life.
While these five books provide a great kick-starter and supplement, for those struggling in your relationship, or wanting to grow you relationship, please make sure to seek out professional support.
